Did you know that there are over 700 species of Eucalyptus trees in Australia, but Koalas eat fewer than 50 species? Yes, they are fussy eaters!
Sadly, we are seeing a large number of these unique marsupials diminishing over the years. Deforestation, disease (chlamydia - yes, they suffer from STDs too), bushfires, and other negative factors. Nobody wants to see these adorable animals go extinct.
A small number of species are the primary choice in the northern river region of NSW, Australia, including Tallowwood (Eucalyptus microcorys), River Red gum (E. tereticornis), Swamp mahogany (E.robusta) and a few more.
Since 2016, our team has planted koala-friendly eucalyptus species along the creek edge each year. This ongoing work helps restore and protect habitat for koalas and other native wildlife.
In late 2019, the Down Under team came together at Buhlambar, our tea tree farm on the NSW east coast, to expand the koala corridor by planting more eucalyptus trees. To date, we’ve planted more than 800 seedlings from species koalas love to eat.
It was a truly special day at our farm, Buhlambar. The team loved getting their hands dirty and extending the koala corridor. We have already been visited by customers and kangaroos!
After years of nurturing the koala corridor along the banks of our farm, our team was thrilled to spot our very first koala!
